Using Core Values As A Compass – 26 January 2013
VALUES – what matters most to you in how you live your life. Your unique set of values is like your DNA. Use them to make wise choices about your future.
Most of the time we’re pretty unaware of the bridge. We’re just living daily life, working out what we’re having for lunch, which socks to buy and when we’re going to make that phone call.
Yet sometimes what’s happening in our lives brings the bridge comes sharply into focus. These moments may be life enlarging and enriching – the choice to leave the parental home, to start a family, to enter into a new relationship, to return to education and learn new things.
At other times there may be fear, sadness, loss or confusion associated with the bridge. Bereavement, relationship breakdown, threat to job security, ill health and empty nest are all examples of times when the bridge can be a fearful place. In those times we may struggle to make decisions, get sucked into imagining an uncertain future or reliving a happier past. We get stuck on the bridge in some way.
Using values as a compass can help us to navigate the bridge more skilfully, whatever it looks and feels like. They help us to become more aware of our choices, make better decisions, move out of stuck and take risks to reach forward for a more fulfilling life.
